Today’s Electric Car Batteries Can Boost the Running Capacity to 600kms!

Electric cars have come of age and soon the world may see a range of cars that run on battery support. The good news is the automotive batteries themselves are now more powerful, more efficient and pack more features than ever before!

The latest Tesla model S, is slated to go up to 410 kilometers, closely matched by the Chevy Bolt with an estimated range of 380-390 kilometers. The soon to be launched Tesla Model 3 is expected to have a range of 350 to 500 kilometers! Even the recently shown prototype of Nissan, the Nissan leaf 2018 promises 240-300 kilometers!

This is soon going to become better and better. And these cars could well signal the way the future of vehicles could go. As the cars take on new dimensions so have car batteries. Technology and R&D have been poured into them and the outcomes have been stunning!

A leading battery company has come out with batteries containing electrical modules that can be added on to it while on the run. These modules can each take the car for a specific number of kilometers. Today, with all its modules filled the battery to power up the electric car to run 600 kilometers and beyond! That’s almost twice the need of the present cars’ running capacity!

The shift from ordinary cells to prismatic cells heralded the new age efficiency of the batteries. Tesla itself showed the way with development of cylindrical cells capable of holding more power. Now the latest is multi-functional battery pack that enables drivers to remove and add on charged modules to the battery itself, thus taking its power further and further.

What was once in the realms of science fiction is a fact of life now. And, a common occurrence in the future.  These electric cars can well be the answer to air pollution, fine particle pollution and the heating up of the ozone layer issues. The car batteries then are the support that can turn the earth a little greener again.

The Fine Art of Filling Distilled Water in Inverter Batteries

The usage of inverters and UPS systems have sky rocketed in India. It’s now quite common to find inverters in any middle income to higher income home in India’s metros. Most of today’s inverters need little or no upkeep and the same goes for their batteries too. The only time the batteries require attention is when they need to be filled with distilled water.

Why do batteries require distilled water?
Most of the inverter battery use plates immersed in water. The water is one of the key reactors in the chemical make-up of the battery. The plates heat the water and enable it to break down into hydrogen and oxygen gases which in turn aid in creating the electrical charges.  As and when the water is used up, it needs to be filled up to keep the inverter working and in good condition.

Why distilled water?
Normal water is full of dissolved salts, minerals, organic and inorganic matter and impurities. These form salty layers on the plates, clog the pores in the plates and hinder their performance, finally leading to a complete breakdown. Even filtered water won’t do as they will still contain invisible free floating ions which will continue to hamper the charge making capabilities of the batteries.  Even RO water can contain hardness and be acidic though it may be free of impurities!

That’s why manufacturers ask buyers to use only water that has been cleaned through an ion filter or activated carbon filter and is completely distilled of all matter and ions for the battery.

Where do you get distilled water?

Today, petrol bunks and battery dealers sell distilled water. Service centers too, keep distilled water with them. You can easily buy from all these sources. The other source is large pharmacies that sell health equipment. Distilled water is used to water down certain injections, though the downside would be that quantities available would be small here. Wherever you go, make sure the places are reputed. Check to see if the bottles have been tampered with and that the seals are intact.

How do you fill the distilled water?
Your battery will have tubes which contain the distilled water. Each tube will have an indicator which shows the levels of water in them. If the indicator drops to the red level, it means you need to fill battery with water.  If the indicator remains at the green level, it means the tube in the battery has water in it.
Three steps to fill inverter battery with distilled water:
  1. Turn off the power before topping up the inverter battery to avoid shocks!
  2. Unscrew the cap on the tube that shows low levels of water.
  3. Place a nozzle on the opening
  4. Pour water through the nozzle, till indicator rises up to the green level.
SF Sonic’s range of inverter batteries are known for low maintenance and better systems.

SF Sonic Power Box, PBX 1500 Plus comes with an advanced Electrolyte Level Indicator sensor. This indicator warns you when electrolyte levels go below optimum point in the battery.

The other two inverter batteries: The S F Sonic Power Punch and the S F Sonic Ready Power enjoy high reputations of being electrolyte efficient and needing fewer top ups.

Check SF Sonic Car Battery Types, Capacity & Warranty

Just as there are no one kind of cars, there is no one kind of batteries. Today, this field has seen enough technological advances to offer a range of benefits as befits the cars. The electronic age has thrown up another great advantage; the batteries can easily be bought online. Just choose the battery needed for your car, check the price, choose the warranty period that’s most expansive and buy.

Before you do that, take a look at some of the car batteries available in the market.

Different types of automotive batteries
  1. Wet or flooded battery: Most popular for being less expensive. Here, freely suspended plates with the positive and the negative charges are separated in different bags. They are fully sealed batteries so remain absolutely maintenance free! Do not require gas /fluid topping ups or replacement.
  2. Calcium-Calcium batteries: These fairly long lasting batteries can be bought at very low prices. These batteries contain a calcium alloy on the side of the negative and positive charged plates. This is mainly to reduce the fluid loss during transmission.
  3. Valve Regulated Lead Batteries: The pressurized valves in the batteries compress the gas into forming water so there is absolutely no need to replace water in this kind of battery. These batteries are of 2 types:
    • Absorbed glass mats. The mats keeps internal resistance at a minimum and so are able to generate more power per crank.
    • AGM or Gel formula: Silicon is used to make the lead acid become a gel like substance. This makes the battery last longer but is not necessarily good to generate more power when needed.
  4. Deep cycle batteries: These batteries are ideal for smaller vehicles like golf carts, electric cars and small boats that run short distances and don’t require quick power surges. Thicker plates enable these batteries to last long. Their high discharge rate makes them good for small but frequently used vehicles.
  5. Lithium Ion batteries: Very expensive but with some great advantages. They’re not heavy and so they’re perfect for vehicles that offer fuel efficiency. Ideal for electric cars and dual fuel cars and energy saving vehicles.

SF Sonic’s Flash Start advantages: The rugged, power supremo!
The SF Sonic offers more power per crank with a few smart changes in the components:

The calcium-silver alloy which increases resistance power and reduces over charging enabling the battery to start, whatever the weather, in seconds!

Corrosion resistant calcium-calcium grid that enables the battery deliver more power for every crank, be resistant to heat and weather changes and to vibrations in the form of bad rod or bumpy roads.
Now, take an informed decision when you want to buy new car batteries or want to just replace your old batteries with more advanced ones.

Tips/Tricks for Truck Battery Maintenance:

Compared to car batteries, truck batteries are much more powerful and can stand much more load. These heavy batteries are designed with long and rough rides in mind while providing the maximum power output as possible.

Here are are few tips for truck battery maintenance:

  • Make sure that the surface of the battery is clean. Dirty or wet batteries usually end up discharging power, reducing the life and power output of it.
  • Discharge can also be caused by dirty battery terminals, loose connections or any sort of physical damage to the battery.
  • Apply some grease or petroleum jelly to the terminals to avoid rusting and corrosion. They reduce the overall battery performance and life.
  • Make sure all electrolyte levels are at maximum. Never refill the battery with normal or tap water. Always use only distilled water to top up the battery.
  • Any physical damages after a long drive indicate overheating or overcharging. Constantly keep a check on it.
  • Test the battery once in 2 months with a hydrometer or a voltmeter to keep track of its performance.

How to Choose the Right Inverter Battery?

Choose best inverter battery your home & business

Start with the list of appliances that you want to run on an inverter and their wattage. Check the list below to get some standard values used for calculations:

1 Fan – Fans Consume 75-90 Watts. For calculation we can take 90 watts.
1 tube light – Assume 45-50 watts for standard tube lights. 28 watts for T5 tube lights.
1 CFL – 25 watts (default) or take the actual number if known.
1 Television – LED TVs take 30-100 watts depending on size. LCD TVs consume 50-150 watts. CRT takes about 120 watts.

Suppose you want 1 Fan, 1 Tube light, 1 CFL & 1 CRT television to operate at the time of power failure, i.e. running on inverter, the total power requirement comes out to be (1*90 + 1*50 + 1*25 + 1*120) = 285 watts. 285 watts here is the total load.

If you want a backup of 6 hours, then you need to store 285 x 6 = 1710 Watt-hour or 1.71 kilo watt hour (or units) of electricity. This is the storage that you need.
